Derailed explores the concept of disrupting the unspoken norms that dictate behaviour in public spaces. These norms, which act as an "invisible collective corset," subtly regulate how we present ourselves and interact with others. Although not explicitly enforced by laws, they shape our conduct, influencing what is considered acceptable or out of place—such as the idea that lying down in a public area feels inappropriate, even though it's not illegal.
The performance uses these unspoken rules as a "choreographic score," meaning it treats them as a set of movements to be played with, bent, and reshaped. Through this creative process Derailed seeks to alter the everyday patterns of behaviour, breaking open these hidden structures and allowing new forms of interaction and ways of being to emerge. By consciously "derailing" this everyday choreography, it aims to reveal and disrupt the underlying patterns that dictate how we use our bodies and move through public spaces.
Ultimately, Derailed invites a reimagining of public space, encouraging us to see it as a flexible environment where new realities and ways of connecting can be discovered, fostering a sense of shared, collective exploration among city dwellers.
