ALMOST NOT MAD 2022 - Sidney Leoni

ALMOST NOT MAD is a 2022 biographical film written and directed by French director Sidney Leoni. it offers an intimate and subjective portrait of Polish dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, perhaps the most iconic ballet performer of the twentieth century.

The film meanders through Nijinsky’s life, from his notable success in Paris with the Ballets Russes company, to the time when his mental condition deteriorates and he gets diagnosed with schizophrenia. Nijinsky testifies about his entry into psychosis in his diaries, in which he is pursued by sexual obsessions, the fear of losing his work, and the horror of the First World War. A few years earlier, Nijinsky becomes romantically involved with Romola de Pulszky, a society girl who joins the Ballets Russes specifically to seduce him. After a series of misunderstandings with Ballets Russess’ impresario Sergueï Diaghilev, who was both his domineering mentor and possessive lover, Nijinsky impulsively marries Romola.

ALMOST NOT MAD received the award  for Best International Feature Film at the Polish International Film Festival.

Far from the classic form of the "artist's portrait", and with a rather daring and playful editing which oscillates between fact and fiction, this film is a sensible testimony, a window on the human soul, where submission to codes no longer exists, and where temporal reference points are blurred, leaving room for the poetic expression of feeling, the true driving force behind Nijinsky’s revolutionary creation.
