PEARLS 2024 - Joshua Serafin

PEARLS is the third and final part of the trilogy titled Cosmological Gangbang. It is a live performance composed of three performer. Joshua Serafin, Lukresia Quismundo, Bunny Cadag.

PEARLS wishes to create contemporary rituals for the queer bodies. It takes as a starting point the Filipino pre-colonial identity, which is fluid and doesn’t conform to binary representation, as is the case in many other pre-colonial societies. The main inspiration of this work is spiritual backgrounds in Philippine society, and precolonial gender belief systems passed down through generational oral knowledge. The performance wants to transfigure this local experience to a much more global consciousness. The work hopes to rewrite history and speculate a possible future, by fantasising through the transformation of our physical selves embodying gods and goddesses. A societal reimagining and empowerment for the entirety of the Global South and brown bodies.

Joshua Serafin, Bunny Cadag and Lukresia Quismundo are three Filipina woman in different stages of their transhood. We would like to create a ritual of shedding normative ideals of gender, shedding of our colonial history; a process of healing from generational trauma, a dance and ritual of decolonizing to be able to find our own ancestral historical body.

The title PEARLS was chosen for a variety of reasons. The Philippines has been called the "Pearl of the Eastern Seas. They owe that name to Spanish missionary Fr. Juan J. Delgado in 1751. So the term "pearl" is a reference to our motherland, but equally to the Orientalist terminology that was used there to designate that country. In addition, PEARLS aims to be a healing ritual. To heal, we must first acknowledge all the pain and trauma we carry as performers, share our stories as queer, trans people with brown bodies. Those very painful and dark stories we want to transform into something beautiful.  Pearls are formed by tiny, abrasive particles that find their way into the bodies of shellfish. As a defense mechanism, these species cover the particles with layer after layer of a shiny coating - until a pearl is formed.
