Terms & Conditions 2025 - Ingrid Berger Myhre

Terms & Conditions looks at how meaning is constantly changing and how we have embodied understandings of the terms we use.

Spoken language is always accompanied by gestures. We emphasise our words or soften them, we extend their meaning or brush it off. The silent contract between language and movement is the subject of Terms & Conditions. How do we use the body as a conduit for language? Under what circumstances must the body act out, adjust, or contradict language? And what do you do with variable interpretations of words?

For the past years Ingrid's artistic project has sought ways of revealing and challenging different relationships between dance and language. Her two most recent productions In Other Words (2021) and Spelling Spectacle (2023) stem from her overall artistic project around literacy in dance, that she started to develop during Research Studios ‘17 - ‘17 at P.A.R.T.S in Brussels. They are performances that in two different ways explore the logics of language in performance - choreographic studies of the syntax, grammar and vocabulary of dance.

Etymology, or word history, is the part of linguistics that deals with where words come from. It looks at the connections between concepts and meanings, and how these have changed over time depending on context and use. Etymology can be seen as a kind of map of the movement and relationships of words, both formally and semantically.

This will be used as a framework to think historically and contextually about how language moves choreographically. Through game structures and choreographic assignments the exploration focuses on the literal and metaphorical, associative trains of thought, embodied and related meaning, formal shifts and puns. Where does meaning reside? And who opens up meaning? Methodologically, the research project investigates and develops etymology as theoretical framework and choreographic tool.
