Solo for Eko Supriyanto (working title) is a solo performance for Eko Supriyanto created by Arco Renz and Eko Supriyanto. Eko Supriyanto is one of today's most outstanding and multifaceted performing artists in Indonesia. Accomplished Javanese Court dancer of an ancient family lineage, he later choreographed for Peter Sellars, joined Madonna for the Drowned World Tour 2001, became professor for dance at the acclaimed ISI Surakarta and created his own contemporary dance company.
Starting point of the Solo are two most remarkable and seemingly conflicting cornerstones of Eko's biography: the Javanese Court Dance Tradition and the American MTV- and pop culture. The solo confronts these two poles in order to investigate Individuality, Freedom and Entertainment in the context of Javanese tradition, its transmission and contemporary renewal.
The performance intertwines and confronts Madonna's Pop music and entertainment strategies with space-time concepts of Javanese Court Dance. It thus creates a condensed perspective on an important challenge that Indonesia's young generation experiences today.
Created together with Solo for Eko Supriyanto, also Solo for Melanie Lane explores in a specific way the introduction of Western pop culture into Javanese culture, their mutual impact and eventual interlacing. Both solos are independent full length evening performances that can be presented in a shared evening or in two separate evenings.
